This news tells us about the former president, who is facing criminal charges in New York on Tuesday after being indicted by a Manhattan grand jury last week in Stormy Daniels' bribery and closing scheme. Although he has been charged with more than 30 counts of corporate fraud, individual charges remain open.
Trump surrendered voluntarily, making this a unique case both for the Manhattan law firm and the New York courthouse where he was on trial, and for the country influencing the GOP presidential primary. An aide described his mood on Monday as "challenged and focused," and after the charges he remained "very calm" in Florida, where he spent the weekend playing golf and thinking about boosting his campaign. Tuesday night's speech at Mar-a-Lago should have given Trump more opportunity to claim he was politically abused.
How's the process going, will Trump be in handcuffs?
Trump left Florida just after noon ET on Monday and landed at New York's LaGuardia Airport around 3 p.m. 30 ET. The former president will remain at Trump Tower Monday night and is expected to leave New York for Florida shortly after Tuesday's indictment, the sources said. But even before Trump's appearance, his presence will be felt in the Manhattan courthouse on Tuesday, as the entire trial and most other proceedings were suspended before he arrived. The Secret Service, the New York Police Department and bailiffs are coordinating security for Trump's expected arrival.
The Secret Service is scheduled to accompany Trump to the attorney general's office in the same building as the attorney general's office in the afternoon. Investigators charged Trump with fingerprinting, among other things.
Usually mug shots are taken. However, sources familiar with the preparations were unsure whether the shooting would take place - as Trump's appearance was widely known and officials feared releasing inaccurate photos would violate state laws.
Usually, after being arrested, the accused are arrested and held in a cell near the courtroom awaiting trial. But not so with Trump. When the former president had finished the trial, he was led through a back hall and elevator to the floor where the courtroom was. He then left the public corridor to enter the courtroom.
Trump is not expected to be handcuffed as he will be surrounded by armed federal agents to protect him. "Sure it's different. It's never happened before. I've never sued the Secret Service at 100 Center Street," Trump's attorney, Joe Tacopina, told CNN's State of the Union on Sunday. In the afternoon, Trump is scheduled to be taken into the courtroom where charges will be filed and charges will be formally filed against him.
Once Trump is tried, he will almost certainly be acquitted. It is possible, though unlikely, that these conditions could be adjusted during this time. Normally, acquitted defendants would walk out the front door, but the Secret Service wanted to limit Trump's time and space in public.
Instead, after the court session is over, Trump is expected to walk back out into the public hallway and into a back alley to the attorney general's office, where his motorcade will be waiting for him. He then drove to the airport to return to Mar-a-Lago, where he set up an event for public speaking night.
